How to Read Employment Data
Employment data is only a reference: starting salary varies by city, industry and role; employment rates may include flexible work or graduate study; samples and definitions differ. Look at trends and distributions, not one number.
What to look at
Median or range of starting salary, not just the maximum.
Industry and role distribution, plus three-to-five-year growth.
Industry cycle: expanding, stable or contracting.
Common biases
Surveying only employed graduates and ignoring unemployment or career changes.
Applying first-tier city pay nationwide.
Treating outliers as the major's average.
FAQ
Is a 95 percent employment rate high?
Check the definition: does it include graduate study or flexible work, and how do major and school differ?
Should I avoid a low-starting-salary major?
Not necessarily; consider growth, stability and your interest.
